About Mary

After earning her Bachelor of Science degree in journalism at the University of Maryland College Park, Mary began her career as a journalist in the D.C. area working for various publishers. She covered federal housing, healthcare, social services programs and environmental policy. She eventually wrote about the U.S. House and Senate for CongressDaily, initially full time and then as a freelance reporter.

After a few years staying home to raise children, Mary transitioned back to work part-time for her County Councilman where she was the education liaison to the school board and PTA's.

From there she went to work as the chief of staff for MD Delegate Joseline Peña-Melnyk who became a friend and mentor. Mary realized how much she loved public service working on policy and legislation as well as helping constituents with personal, family, neighborhood and workplace challenges.

She was elected to the Prince George's County Council in 2010 and was reelected in 2014. She was term-limited in 2018 and ran for and won an open House of Delegates seat in 2018. Mary was reelected in 2022 and serves on the House Environment and Transportation Committee (ENT). Many of the bills she sponsors focus on the environment, clean energy, clean water, flood control, animal welfare and tenant protections, all of which are referred to ENT.

Mary and her husband Dale live in West Laurel. They are the parents of four adult children.

Environment and Transportation Committee

The Environment and Transportation Committee deals with a vast number of issues within the state of Maryland. Between bills that regulate the Department of Environment and various industries to the approval of new roadways and tolls, ENT plays an essential role for all of our citizens.

As a member of this committee, my staff and I meet with advocates and other legislators and their staff on various bills while conducting our research. It is important to me to make the most informed decisions and to listen to my constituents’ concerns.
